GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's swim team with kick off the 2015-16 season with a Crimson and Slate scrimmage Friday afternoon in the Paul Wright Natatorium. The action starts at 3 p.m. and is free to the public.
"It's fun to finally start to race, even in a scrimmage setting," said head coach
Geoff Hanson. "The team has been working really hard for over a month."
The team is coming off of a sixth place finish at last season's conference meet. The team scored 304 points, just two behind Adams State. Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference affiliate California Baptist University won the meet with 1,053 points and went on to finish eighth at the national meet.
Western State women's swim team is in its fourth season since being added to the school. Though the team is young – six freshmen, 11 sophomores, 10 juniors and a senior – it returns a huge amount of last year's success.
"This is a good chance to check where the team is at a week before we begin our first meets," said Hanson. "I'm excited to see where our whole team is at and see our freshmen in a race environment."
Sophomore
Hannah Meehan comes off a freshman season in which she was a part of six school records, the most by any one person in the program's history.
Morgan Aragon and
Alexandra Marsolek each have five records.
The Mountaineers first competition is set for Friday, Oct. 9, at CSU-Pueblo. Western State hosts its first meet Friday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m. against Colorado Mesa University.
