GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's volleyball team dominated Colorado Christian University (8-6, 3-1 RMAC) in a four set win (19-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-20) Saturday evening in the Paul Wright Gymnasium. The Mountaineers (4-11, 2-3 RMAC) win back-to-back games for the first time since the end of last season. Both the wins were over RMAC Mountain Division leaders Colorado Mines (3
rd) and Colorado Christian (2
nd).
After a slow first set, the Mountaineers laid down the hammer, winning the second set by 15 points, the largest margin of victory in a set since October 2014. The pace continued after the break, winning the third set by 13. After an eight-point run by the Mountaineers in the fourth set, the Cougars rallied with a five-point run to swing momentum, but came up short in the comeback.
Jordan Eatwell led the Mountaineers' attack with a match-high 13 kills.
Taylor Castillo added in 10 kills.
Allison Walker had 33 assists to five players.
Defense was the key to the victory, led by
Amanda Maestas and
Logan Franek with 15 and 12 digs, respectfully. Up front,
Avery Burkholder (seven kills) had a match-high five block assists.
Tori Gaherty, Eatwell and
Molly Hothan each had four blocks, with
Kathleen Kasel stepping in with three.
The Mountaineers held the Cougars to a .037 hitting percentage. Western State's front was the key to victory, out-blocking Colorado Christian 13 to five.
Western State returns to action on the road against Regis University October 2 and Chadron State October 3.
