GUNNISON, Colo. – Colorado Mesa shot 55.6 percent from the floor with 11 three-pointers to hand the Western State Colorado University men's basketball team a 103-68 defeat Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym.

CMU (19-7, 14-6 RMAC) went 6-of-6 shooting in the first 4:03 of the game to take an early 16-6 lead over the Mountaineers (4-20, 3-17 RMAC).

The Mavericks continued their hot shooting, increasing their lead to as many as 25 in the first period. Danny Hopkins (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) totaled 10 first-half points for Western, connecting on a couple of three-pointers late in the half to make it a 50-31 game at the break.

After the Mavericks pushed their lead to 21 points early in the second half, a trey by Lucas Adams (So., Firestone, Colo.) brought the Mountaineers within 18.

However, CMU was able to make it a 20-point game again with a jumper by Joe Kiely with 17:40 to play.

The Mountaineers were unable to put together a second half run as the Mavericks stretched their lead to as many as 36 points late in the period to record a 103-68 victory.

Hopkins led the Mountaineers with 17 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Devin Kastrup (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished with 13 points while Chances Matlock (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) totaled 12. Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) tied a season-high nine assists to lead Western.

Ryan Stephan led the Mavericks with 33 points and 12 boards while Julian Vasquez (14), Michael Melillo (13) and Landon Vermeer (12) also reached double figures.

The Mountaineers wrap up the 2014-15 season next weekend when they host Fort Lewis and Adams State. Western will take on FLC on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before facing ASU on Saturday at the same time.
