GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University men's basketball lost a shootout Saturday night in Paul Wright Gym. The Mountaineers were unable to comeback against Fort Lewis College after a close first half. The Skyhawks took a 85-75 win against Western.
Despite the loss, Western (2-9, 1-4 RMAC) outshot and outrebounded FLC (9-1, 4-1 RMAC) on Saturday. The Mountaineers shot 54.8 percent (23-of-42) from the field, compared to the Skyhawks' 52.1 percent (25-of-48). Western also grabbed 29 rebounds to FLC's 19.
Western guard
Danny Hopkins (Sr., Riverside, California) led the Mountaineers' offensive output. Hopkins scored 20 points and led the team in assists with four. The senior guard has scored 15 or more points in seven games this season.Â
After going down 11 points with 11:03 left to play, Western cut the FLC lead down to three points with 4:33. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, it would be the closest Western would get to the Skyhawks.
The Mountaineers had three other players score in double figures on Saturday.
Robert Romero (Jr., Palm Springs, California) added 14 points, while
James Willis (Fr., Parker, Colorado) and
Tom Folsom (Jr., Riverside, California) each contributed 12 points.
FLC's Joshua Blaylock led the game in scoring with 21 points.
Western will continue the season next weekend on the road against Chadron State College and Regis University.
