GUNNISON, Colo. – In front of a large holiday sized crowd, the Western State Colorado University men's basketball program won its first game of the 2015-16 season, 81-77, against Eastern New Mexico University. The team takes on Cameron University tomorrow at 7 p.m.
The game was a close one, tied at 35 apiece through the first half. Out of the break the Mountaineers went on a run to earn a 10 point lead that they kept until the final two minutes of the game.
Ben Beauchamp led all Mountaineers with 25 points. Beauchamp was five for 10 from the field and made four shots from beyond the arc.
Will Duggan and
Robert Romero added 13 points each.
Also for Western state, Duggan had eight assists while
Danny Hopkins had six.
Defensively,
Tom Folsom tore down eight boards, while Romero had seven.
Greyhounds guard John Gilliam led all scorers with 31 points. He was 10 for 16 from the field and made 10 of 11 free throws.
The Mountaineers shot 49 percent from the field and 35 from beyond the arc.
