PUEBLO, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's swim and dive team upended Colorado State University Pueblo in the first meet of the 2015-16 season. The Mountaineers nearly doubled the ThunderWolves, outscoring their opponent 147-76.
"It was a great opening meet for us," said head coach
Geoff Hanson. "We still have a lot to work on and fix, but the team is well ahead of where we began last year. We are very happy opening with a conference win and hope to get another tomorrow."
Western State won eight of 13 events in the meet, the 400 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 200 IM, 100 backstroke, 500 freestyle, 1 meter dive, 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay. Maalaea Lawrence and
Alexandra Marsolek led the charge, scoring 13 points each. Marsolek helped the team win the 400 medley relay, while also winning the 200 IM and placing second in the 100 breaststroke. Lawrence was part of the second place 400 medley relay, second in the 50 freestyle, and won the 100 breaststroke.
Other individual winners for the Mountaineers were
Kate Hewson in the 50 freestyle,
Randi Yarnell in the 100 backstroke,
Akemi King in the 500 freestyle and
Ashley Nguyen in the 1 meter dive.
The CSU-Pueblo team was tabbed fifth in the RMAC Coaches Preseason poll, with the Mountaineers ranked seventh.
CSU-Pueblo's April McDonough was the leading individual point scorer with 21 total points. McDonough won the 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle and placed third in the 500 freestyle
Western State travels to take on Adams State University tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. The Grizzlies outscored the Mountaineers by just two points at the 2015 RMAC Championships.
