VB | Western State defeats Westminster in fifth set win

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Western State Colorado University earned its first victory in school history over Westminster College Friday evening in Salt Lake City, Utah. The two squads had never met before, but know each other well after a long up and down five set victory (25-20, 18-25, 25-8, 20-25, 15-10) in favor of the Mountaineers (6-12, 4-4 RMAC). Western State takes on Colorado Mesa University tomorrow evening in Grand Junction. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

With the win tonight Western State jumps Chadron State for eighth in the RMAC.

Four Mountaineers hit in the double-digits, led by Tori Gaherty's 14 kills. Molly Hothan had 13 kills and a match-high .524 hitting percentage. Taylor Castillo also had 13 kills, while Jordan Eatwell added 11. Allison Walker dished out 47 assists and a pair of aces. Castillo led the team with three aces, while Jordan Eatwell capped off the victory with one of her two aces.

The Mountaineers also played extremely well on defense, holding the Griffins (5-11, 2-6 RMAC) to a .098 hitting percentage. Four Mountaineers ended the night in double-digit digs. Amanda Maestas had a team-high 20 digs, while Walker put up 16. Eatwell chipped in 14 and Logan Franek added a dozen. Up front, Avery Burkholder and Hothan put up a wall with four block assists apiece. Gaherty had three of her own, while Walker and Castillo had a pair of block assists each.

The third set victory tied the largest set victory in Mountaineer history. The last time 25-8 was accomplished was the end of October in 2010 against Adams State University. The only lower opponent scores came before 2001, when the NCAA had volley scoring to 15 points.
