Western (0-5, 0-3 RMAC) looked in control of the game early, driving down the field with ease. After starting at their own six-yard line, the Mountaineers marched down the field and had the ball at Chadron State's one-yard line. However, the Mountaineers were unable to convert and score points as CSC (2-3, 1-2 RMAC) used a turnover to keep Western off the scoreboard.
Chadron struck first blood with 2:25 left in the first quarter. The Mountaineers answered with a
Ryan Winke (Jr., Auora, Colorado) 40-yard field goal, making the scored 7-3 in favor of the Eagles with 9:47 remaining in the first half.
The Eagles would add one more score before the half with a one-yard touchdown rush, capping a 78-yard, 10-play possession. At halftime, the score was 14-3.
The Mountaineers matched CSC score-for-score in the second half and found themselves down seven points with 2:01 remaining after an Ekeler one-yard rushing touchdown. After a failed onside kick, the Mountaineer defense, led by linebacker
Jacob Bernhard (Sr., Fort Lupton, Colorado), held the Eagles and forced a punt. With 53 seconds remaining Western had the ball on their own one-yard line and looked to quickly march down the field and tie the game. However, the Mountaineers were unable to score and time ran out on the comeback.
Bernhard recorded a game high tying 17 tackles. Bernhard has recorded 14 or more tackles in the last four games.
Western will continue the season against Black Hills State University next Saturday in Spearfish, South Dakota.
