FB | Mountaineers host Skyhawks for Halloween Game

GUNNISON, Colo.- After three consecutive wins, Western State Colorado University football will be looking for their fourth on Saturday. The Mountaineers will host Fort Lewis College at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Mountaineer Bowl. Halloween is also on Saturday and fans are encouraged to wear their costumes and help cheer Western to victory. Fans dressed in a costume will have a chance to win the costume contest. Those brave enough will also be treated to a pumpkin pie eating contest during halftime.

Western (3-5, 3-3 RMAC) will be looking to win four straight for the first time since the 1998 season. That season, Western won five consecutive games, including a 63-0 win over FLC. Over the past three victories, Western has outscored their opponents by 105 points, 163-58. The Mountaineers are coming off a 45-28 win over Western New Mexico University last Saturday.

The Mountaineers are led on offense by running back Austin Ekeler (Jr., Eaton, Colorado). Ekeler leads Division II in all-purpose yards per game with 222.86. He also ranks third in rushing yards per game (183.7), and total rushing yards (1,286). Against WNMU last week, he broke the school record for rushing yars in a game with 344 and tied for the most single game rushing touchdowns with five.

On defense, inside linebacker Jacob Bernhard (Sr., Fort Lupton, Colorado) has already recorded 111 tackles this season, averaging 15.9 per game. Bernhard ranks third in Division II for tackles per game and is tied for third in solo tackles per game (7.6).

FLC (4-4, 3-3 RMAC) enters Saturday's game on a three game losing streak. However, all three losses have come against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's top three teams.

The Skyhawks offense is controlled by the running duo of quarterback Jordan Doyle and running back PJ Hall. The two have combined for 1,260 yards on the ground and FLC is ranked 36th in Division II for rushing offense.

Defensively, Andrew Ike leads FLC in tackles with 58 and has recorded 4.0 tackles for a loss and two interceptions on the season.

Saturday will mark the 54th meeting between the two programs. Western holds a commanding 40-13 lead in the series. In Mountaineer Bowl, Western has a record of 14-7 against the Skyhawks. However, FLC has won the last two games in Gunnison. The last Western win against FLC at home came on Sept. 27, 2008 with the Mountaineers winning 53-24.
