GUNNISON, Colo. - An onslaught of three-point shooting helped lead Western State Colorado University men's basketball to victory Saturday night. The Mountaineers defeated Colorado Christian University 81-77, making 11 three-point field goals.
Western (3-9, 2-6 RMAC) got out to a six point lead midway through the first half. However, CCU (7-6, 4-3 RMAC) would make a comeback and lead by six with 46 seconds remaining in the first half. A three-pointer by
Keenan Prochazka (Jr., Moose Pass, Alaska) cut the CCU lead to three points and Western went into halftime down three, 33-30.
In the second half, the Riverside, California connection came through for Western as
Danny Hopkins (Jr., Riverside, California) and
Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, California) took control of the contest. Hopkins and Biddle combined to score 7-of-8 three-pointers, while Biddle added 12 free throws to help put the Mountaineers over the edge in the second half. Biddle scored a game high 29 points while Hopkins added 22.
Western's 51 second half points is a season record for the offense. On the defensive side, the Mountaineers held CCU to just .365 shooting from the field, which is second best this season.
Western will continue the season next weekend when traveling to UC-Colorado Springs and CSU-Pueblo.
