LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Western State Colorado University volleyball team got out to a fast start Friday night against Colorado Christian University.  The Mountaineers won the first set but the Cougars won the following three, taking the match 3-1.

Western (0-9, 0-5 RMAC) used a strong team effort in the first set to propel them to victory.  A total of seven Mountaineers all earned kills in the first set, compared to CCU's four.

Most of the first set was back and forth and the set became all square at 23 points.  A kill by Western's Jordan Eatwell (Fr., Fruita, Colorado) and a CCU (10-4, 4-1 RMAC) error gave the Mountaineers a set one victory.

That celebration was short lived however, as the Cougars came storming back in the second set.  CCU took the second set 25-9.

The third set was much like the second.  CCU got out to an early lead and hung on for a 25-26 victory.

With their backs against the wall in the fourth set, the Mountaineers kept pace with the Cougars.  The score was back and forth and eventually found a tie at 14 points.  CCU gained some separation on a 6-0 run, giving the Cougars a 20-14 lead.  Western attempted to mount a comeback but ran out of time as CCU took the fourth and final set 25-21.

A total of 14 Mountaineers made an appearance in Friday night's match.  Eatwell led the team in kills with 12, while teammates Allison Walker (So., Aurora, Colorado) and Tepora Su'a (Jr., San Diego, California) each had 19 assists.

The Mountaineers will have another road match on Saturday night.  They will travel into Denver to face the Regis University Rangers at 5 p.m.
