SPEARFISH, S.D. - In the conference opening game for the Western State Colorado University men's basketball team, the Mountaineers went into overtime. Western faced Black Hills State University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener on Friday night. The Mountaineers made a heroic comeback, forcing overtime, but fell to the Yellow Jackets 57-64.
BHSU (3-4, 1-0 RMAC) took control in the first half and extended an early lead to 14 points with 4:45 remaining before the break. A late surge by Western (1-4, 0-1 RMAC) cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 10 points at 25-35.
Consistent play by the Yellow Jackets had them in the lead by 11 points with 13 minutes remaining in the game. However, Western came charging back and tied the game with 3:08 remaining at 50 points.
With 13 seconds remaining, BHSU took a three point lead. After a failed three-point attempt by Western with six seconds remaining,
Keenan Prochazka (Jr., Moose Pass, Alaska) secured the rebound and threw up the game tying three-point shot. Prochazka drained the three-pointer and sent the game into overtime.
The Yellow Jackets scored nine of the 11 overtime points and won the overtime game, 57-64.
Western's
Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, California) led the game in scoring with 22 points, and recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
The Mountaineers will continue the season Saturday against the Chadron State College Eagles on Saturday.
