OGDEN, Utah - Western State Colorado University men's basketball opened the 2014 season with an exhibition game with Weber State University on Saturday. The Mountaineers hung tough, but ultimately fell to Division I opponent Weber State 63-78.
Western opened the season Saturday night, playing right with the Wildcats. After a three-point field goal by returner
Devin Kastrup (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado), Western trailed Weber by only four points with 6:57 remaining in the first half.
After a quick run by the Wildcats, WSU had a 13-point first half lead. However, a free throw from
Jalen Thompson (So., Denver, Colorado) and a four point play by Dominque Wright (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) cut that lead to eight points as the two teams went into the break.
The Mountaineers were unable to gain any ground on Weber in the second half, but showed signs of good things to come under new Head Coach
Bradd Schafer.
Kastrup led the team in scoring with 16 points.
Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, California) was the only other Mountaineer to score in double figures, adding 11 points and five assists.
As a team, Western shot over 40 percent from the field making 23-of-55 shots.
The Mountaineers will begin the regular season Friday at the Al Kaly Classic in Pueblo, Colorado against Midwestern State University. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Massari Arena.
