PUEBLO, Colo. - Western State Colorado University men's basketball opened the regular season Friday afternoon at the Al Kaly Shrine Classic Tournament.  Western went up against Midwestern State University in the opening game.  The Mountaineers were unable to match the size of Midwestern and fell 77-63.

Western (0-1, 0-0 RMAC) played well under new Head Coach Bradd Schafer, but were unable to match the size of MSU (1-0, 0-0 LSC).  The Mustangs scored 48 of their 77 points from inside the paint.

The Mountaineers and Mustangs played a tightly contested first half.  Midway through the first half, Western and MSU were tied at 13 points.

The Mustangs then went on a 9-0 run over three minutes to take a 22-13 lead with 6:39 remaining in the first half.  Western was unable to cut into the MSU lead as the Mustangs took a nine point lead, 37-28 into the break.

In the second half, MSU continued to build on their first half lead and ended the game ahead 14 points, 77-63.

Mason Biddle (Sr., Riverside, California) led the Mountaineers scoring attack with 20 points, and recorded five assists and grabbed six rebounds.  Teammate Devin Kastrup (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colorado) scored 16 points, while Danny Hopkins (Jr., Riverside, California) added 14 points.

MSU's Bretson McNeal led the game in scoring with 25 points.

Western will play their final game of the Al Kaly Shrine Classic on Saturday against West Texas A&M University.  The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. from Massari Arena.
