GUNNISON, Colo. - Looking to win their fifth straight meet, Western State Colorado University women's swimming and diving hosted Colorado Mesa University on Saturday. Western got out to an early lead, but ultimately fell to the Mavericks 112-131.
Despite not getting a victory on Saturday, the Western women proved they could swim with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's top teams. The meet against CMU was one of the best performances by the Mountaineers since the program was reinstated in 2012.
The start of the meet set the tone for Western. The Mountaineers' 200-yard medley relay team of
Morgan Aragon (Fr., Corona, California),
Alexandra Marsolek (So., Frisco, Texas),
Danielle Ginsburg (Jr., Reno, Nevada) and
Kate Hewson (Fr., Estes Park, Colorado) won the event, finishing 0.05 seconds ahead of the CMU relay team.
Marsolek would also go on to win the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in a time of 2:18.51.
Kelsey Oettinger (So., Colorado Springs, Colorado) won the third event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 2:03.36.
After the first five events, Western held a 53-40 lead.
In the eighth event, Western's
Ariel Fitch (Fr., Coalville, Utah) proved to fast for the competition, winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 57.71. Teammate
Anna Kaiser (Fr., Pocatello, Idaho) finished just behind Fitch with a time of 57.90.
With three events remaining, CMU took the lead 95-93.
With the meet on the line in the final event, Western and CMU squared off in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Much like the first relay, the race was neck and neck. The Mavericks edged Western by 0.27 seconds, taking the win.
The Mountaineers will try and build off this performance and will travel to CMU for their next competition, the Colorado Mesa Invite, on December 4.
