PUEBLO, Colo. - After scoring a season high 31 points in a first set victory for Western State Colorado University volleyball, the Mountaineers seemed to be on their way to a win. However, home team Colorado State University - Pueblo had other ideas and won the next three sets. The ThunderWolves took the 3-1 victory on the first of six road matches for Western.
After going down 24-20 in the first set, Western (0-13, 0-9 RMAC) looked to be headed for an early defeat. However, the Mountaineers surged back and scored the next four points to tie the match at 24 points. Western and CSU-Pueblo (11-7, 5-4 RMAC) exchanged points and eventually the score was inflated to 29-28 in favor of the ThunderWolves. Again facing set point, Western rose to the occasion and with a final kill by
Jordan Eatwell (Fr., Fruita, Colorado) took the first set 31-29.
In the second set, the ThunderWolves led for most of the way. However, the Mountaineers were never far off as CSU-Pueblo's largest lead amounted to four points at 18-14. Like the first set, the Mountaineers clawed their way back into the match and tied CSU-Pueblo at 22 points. Unfortunately for Western, the second set swung in CSU-Pueblo's favor as the ThunderWolves won 25-22.
With momentum going the way of the home side, CSU-Pueblo rolled in the third and fourth sets, 25-13 and 25-10 respectively.
Crystal Powell (Fr., Aurora, Colorado) led Western in kills, recording 15 in the match. Teammate
Tepora Su'a (Jr., San Diego, California) recorded a game high 33 assists.
Western continues the road trip on Friday against Adams State University at 7 p.m. in Alamosa, Colorado.
