GUNNISON, Colo. - The Western State Colorado University volleyball team was downed in three sets by No. 20 Colorado Mesa University on Saturday night. The Mountaineers fought hard and stayed with the nationally ranked Mavericks, but it wasn't enough.
After losing the first set 25-12, Western (0-12, 0-8 RMAC) pushed CMU (13-3, 7-1 RMAC) to the brink in the second. The Mountaineers tied the match at 23 but after two kills by CMU's Casey Ball, the Mavericks took the second set 25-23 and went into the third set with momentum.
CMU handled the third set like a nationally ranked team and closed the door on a Western comeback. The Mavericks won the third set 25-15.
Jordan Eatwell (Fr., Fruita, Colorado) and
Hailey Rehage (Jr., Longmont, Colorado) led the Mountaineer attack with seven kills each.
The Mountaineers will begin a six match road trip, starting with CSU-Pueblo on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Massari Arena.
