GUNNISON, Colo. - After losing the first two sets, it looked like the Western State Colorado University volleyball team was finished. However, with two dominant sets, the Mountaineers were back in the match. Unfortunately for Western, Fort Lewis College took the fifth set 15-12 and left Gunnison with a win.
Western (0-11, 0-7 RMAC) and FLC (5-10, 2-5 RMAC) were tied at 24 in the first set. The Mountaineers had won the first set in the previous three of four matches. However, Friday night, the Skyhawks had the advantage. Two kills by Ashley Wells gave FLC the first set win.
Fort Lewis took the following set 25-15 and went into the third set, looking for the sweep.
The Mountaineers had other ideas and dominated the next two sets 25-18 and 25-15, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, both teams made runs but found themselves tied at 12 points. After two Western errors and a kill by Wells, the Skyhawks took the fifth set 15-12.
Western's
Taylor Castillo (Jr., Kiowa, Colorado) and FLC's Wells led the match in kills, each recorded 18.
Tepora Su'a (Jr., San Diego, California) led the match in assists with 49 for the Mountaineers.
Western continues the season Saturday night against Colorado Mesa University at 7 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
