DURANGO, Colo. - After dropping the first two sets against Fort Lewis College on Friday night, Western State Colorado University volleyball came charging back. The Mountaineers won the following two sets, forcing a decisive fifth set. The Skyhawks would score the final four points of the fifth set and take the match 3-2.
Western (0-17, 0-13 RMAC) pushed FLC (6-15, 3-11 RMAC) to five sets for the second time this season. Both fifth sets ended in the same score, 15-12 in favor of the Skyhawks.
After getting behind 2-0, the Mountaineers entered the third set. The Skyhawks came out on fire, scoring the first four points of the set. Western would come back to tie the match at six points. After that point, neither team was able to gain separation on the other. With the set tied at 22 points, FLC committed an error, giving the Mountaineers a window of opportunity. A kill by Western's
Tori Gaherty (So., Colorado Springs, Colorado) and a block by
Crystal Powell (Fr., Aurora, Colorado) and
Sara Larson (Sr., Windsor, Colorado) put the Mountaineers back in the match with a 25-22 third set victory.
In the fourth set, Western went down 21-17 late in the set. A timeout by the Mountaineers seemingly settled the team down and Western went on to score eight of the final 10 points to win the fourth set 25-23.
FLC scored the first four points in the fifth set. Western climbed back out of the hole and were tied with the Skyhawks at 12 points. After winning the two previous sets on last point heroics, the Mountaineers were unable to make it a third set comeback. The Skyhawks won the fifth set 12-15.
Western's
Jordan Eatwell (Fr., Fruita, Colorado) led all players with 24 kills. Gaherty also recorded double digit kills with 10. Teammate
Allison Walker (So., Aurora, Colorado) led all players in assists with 42 as Western's primary setter.
The Mountaineers will have their final road match of the season on Saturday. Western will travel to face No. 14 Colorado Mesa University for a 5 p.m. match in Grand Junction, Colorado.
