SILVER CITY, N.M. - Losing the first two sets, Western State Colorado University volleyball came roaring back against Western New Mexico University on Saturday. The Mountaineers pushed the Lady Mustangs to five sets but fell in the final set 10-15.
Western (0-16, 0-12 RMAC) nearly earned their first victory Saturday. It's the third Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match the Mountaineers have pushed into five sets.
The Mountaineers were out to a 22-17 lead in the first set before WNMU ( RMAC) went on a 7-0 run to take a 24-22 lead. WNMU would win the first set 25-23.
The Lady Mustangs used momentum from the first set to take the second 25-16.
A close set throughout, the third set proved to favor the Mountaineers. Western had a tight lead throughout the set and came away winners 25-21 with the match on the line.
Again needing to win or face a long bus ride home, Western was down 13-10 in the fourth set. After a timeout, the Mountaineers rattled off nine straight points to take a 19-13 lead. Western went on to win the set 25-17 and force a deciding fifth set.
The Lady Mustangs got out to an early 4-0 lead and rode it for the set victory, 15-10.
Jordan Eatwell (Fr., Fruita, Colorado) led all players in kills with 15. Teammate
Allison Walker (So., Aurora, Colorado) led all players in assists with 41.
Western continues the season next Saturday, traveling to Colorado Mesa University.
