Slater Powell

    Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach
Powell begins his third season working with Mountaineer Athletics through a partnership with Gunnison Valley Hospital, after starting in the fall of 2018. 

Powell, who serves as assistant strength & conditioning coach for Western, conducts the weight room programming for cross country, track & field, swimming & diving and volleyball.

He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

In May of 2018, Powell completed his Master of Science in Exercise Physiology at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Prior to his MS, he also graduated with a BS in Exercise Science from MSU, Mankato in December of 2016. 

Powell was a Graduate Assistant in the MSU, Mankato Viola Holbrook Human Performance Lab from August 2016 until his graduation. As a GA, Powell taught two undergraduate exercise science lab sections, HP 102 Individualized Exercise and HP 466 Graded Exercise Testing and Conditioning. 

His duties also included the administration of various metabolic and body composition tests. 

Powell was also a student-athlete at MSU, Mankato where he was a multiple-time All-NSIC performer and an NCAA DII Provisional Qualifier in the 60 meter hurdles. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Minnesota State University, Mankato track & field teams from August 2017 until May 2018. 

Powell resides in Gunnison with his wife, Western assistant athletic trainer Alex Powell (formerly Hartman).
