Shane Niksic

Niksic continues into his fourth season as a cross ocuntry and track assistant coach with the Mountaineers for the 2020-21 season. 

As an assistant to head cross country coach Jennifer Michel, Niksic helps with the administration of the Mountaineer men's and women's cross country programs while focusing on the progression of Mountaineer middle distance runners during the track season. 

Niksic graduated with a master's degree out of the High Altitude Exercise Physiology program at Western Colorado University in the spring of 2019. His research emphasis was focused on body temperature regulation during exercise and also in extreme environments. 

Before coming to Western, Niksic worked in Austin, Texas, at RunLab Austin - a bio-mechanics clinic for runners. In his work, Niksic utilized high speed video gait analysis to help structure rehabilitation plans for athletes. 

Prior to his time in Austin, Niksic was cross country and track & field student-athlete at Colorado Mesa, graduating in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. As a member of the inaugural men's cross country and track & field teams at Colorado Mesa, Niksic served as a team captain all four years and helped create the foundation of a successful program in Grand Junction. As an athlete, Niksic was the first ever All-American for Colorado Mesa men's track and field and also served as captain of the first ever national championship qualifying men's cross country team. 

A 2010 Conifer High School graduate, Niksic spent much of his prep career chasing Western legend Ryan Haebe of Evergreen High School.
