James Douglas

James Douglas begins his second season as an Assistant Track and Field Coach at Western in the 2018-2019 school year.

During his first season with the Mountaineers, Douglas coached Colin Borner to the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championship in the pole vault. Additionally, both Borner and Nocona Swindell achieved NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks in the same event for the outdoor campaign. 

Douglas also guided Haley Vinson into the Western All-Time Top Ten list for the triple jump in her first season with the Mountaineers. 
 
As a student-athlete at Adams State University (ASU) from 2007-11, Douglas was a four-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Champion, three-time All-American, was named the 2007 RMAC Freshman of the Year, and finished in the top-eight at the United States of America Track and Field Indoor Championships in 2011. He also earned 17 All-RMAC honors while at ASU.
 
Douglas has three years experience coaching at the collegiate level and two more at the high school level.

Douglas’ most recent coaching experience came as the head coach of the Alamosa High School boys and girls track and field programs during the 2015-16 season. Douglas coached the Mean Moose to the Intermountain League (IML) titles for both the boys and girls. Four boys earned state titles, while four girls were runners-up at the state championships. For his efforts, Douglas was named the IML Coach of the Year for both the boys and girls.
 
Prior to becoming the head coach at AHS, Douglas founded FastnFar LLC. With FastnFar, Douglas was a certified coach for several local schools and state classifications within the San Luis Valley. Douglas assisted with relays and coordinated practices with coaches. He helped produce six state qualifiers and four state placers.
 
During the 2012-13 season, Douglas was a volunteer assistant coach under U.S. Olympic coach Tim Cawley at Colorado State University. At CSU, Douglas oversaw practice schedules while motivating athletes to achieve individual and team goals.
 
Before working at CSU, Douglas was a volunteer assistant coach at ASU from 2010-11. While primarily working with the horizontal jumpers, Douglas also coached student-athletes in separate individual practices. Douglas also assisted with ASU’s High Altitude Distance Camp from 2013-14.
  
As a student-athlete at ASU, Douglas was a national championship qualifier in his freshman year, competing in the long jump and 4x100 meter relay. He would earn his first All-American honor in the long jump at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. In total, Douglas qualified for five Division II Track and Field Championships between indoor and outdoor.
 
Douglas was a two-time RMAC Indoor Track and Field Champion, winning both the long jump and triple jump in 2010. Earning All-American honors at the 2010 Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, Douglas helped the Grizzlies to the Division II Indoor Track and Field Team National Title that same year.
 
Douglas was also a two-time RMAC Outdoor Track and Field Champion, winning the long jump and 100-meter dash in 2011. Douglas also earned All-American honors in the outdoor long jump in 2011.
 
Douglas graduated from ASU with a degree in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and a minor in management in 2011. He completed his master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in leadership at ASU the following year.
 
Douglas also previously worked in the health care industry between Alamosa and Denver, Colorado for four years from 2013-17.
