Matt Merkens begins his first year as a Graduate Assistant for Western State Colorado University football. Merkens’ primary responsibilities will include coaching the Mountaineer wide receivers.

Before coming to Western, Merkens was an offensive intern at Sam Houston State University. During his time as an intern, Merkens’ duties included offensive quality control, game charting, opponent film breakdown, assisting with the scout team and running quarterback drills.

Before becoming an intern at Sam Houston State, Merkens was a quarterback for the Bearkats from 2010-2012. As a play caller, Merkens helped lead Sam Houston State to two conference championships and two appearances in the NCAA FCS National Championship game.

Merkens graduated from Sam Houston State in 2015 with a degree in kinesiology with a minor in history.
