Grizzlies, Skyhawks Await Mountaineer Challenges

GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado enters the week ready to pose challenges to a pair of visiting teams within the middle and top of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's basketball standings.

Saturday afternoon brings Fort Lewis College, the RMAC leader, to Paul Wright Gym, following a visit Thursday evening from Adams State, which is sitting in a fifth-place tie in the RMAC standings.

THE HISTORY
  • Western had a two-game winning streak against ASU halted with the Grizzlies' win last season. The Mountaineers have an all-time record of 15-25 against ASU.
  • Fort Lewis has an all-time record of 32-7 against Western, the most recent Mountaineer win coming in an 87-83 victory on the road in February 2020.
WESTERN COLORADO HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
  • The Mountaineers, 7-15 overall and 5-9 in the RMAC, are coming off a 75-69 win at MSU Denver last Saturday, earning a split of the season series with the Roadrunners.
  • Western led MSUD for all but 2 minutes and 50 seconds in the road victory, buoyed in the win by four players scoring in double figures, led by Aidan McDowell's 21 points.
  • McDowell leads the RMAC and is second in the nation in scoring at 27.1 PPG. He also leads the league in 3-pointers made per game (3.32) which ranks ninth nationally. Adding to Western's offense is Tyler Halligan at 12.3 PPG and Jordan Kuac at 9.9 PPG.
  • The same trio take care of the Mountaineers off the glass as McDowell and Halligan average 5.0 RPG with Kuac coming away with 4.8 rebounds each outing.
  • Mason Mottashed continues to rise in the RMAC rankings in assists, his 87 helpers the sixth-most in the conference.
ADAMS STATE HEADING INTO THE GAME | 2025-26 Stats
  • The Grizzlies are 15-7 overall and 9-5 in league action. They are on a five game winning streak, posting a +15 scoring margin during the unbeaten run.
  • Its 209 3-pointers are fourth most in the RMAC with Jayce King (44), Wyatt Helming (42), and Dillan Baker (40) leading the team from behind the arc.
  • Helming is the team's leading scorer (15.1 PPG) and rebounder (7.7 RPG).
  • Luke Williams (14.6 PPG), among four Grizzlies averaging double figures in scoring is the setup man in the offensive end as he's dished out 89 assists this season.
FORT LEWIS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2025-26 Stats
  • Leading the conference with a 12-2 RMAC record and a 14-7 overall record, the Skyhawks will play at Colorado Mesa University on Thursday night before continuing on to Paul Wright Gym for Saturday afternoon's game against the Mountaineers.
  • Fort Lewis was a perfect 12-0 in league action, including an early January home victory over Western, but have dropped two RMAC games in a row, losing at Adams State and then in overtime at New Mexico Highlands.
  • The Skyhawks bang inside in the offensive end, ranking last in the RMAC in made 3-pointers (134) as a team. That doesn't mean they can't shoot from behind the arc as Jaxon Smith has dropped in 60 treys so far.
  • Stewart Erhart is the spark for the FLC attack, leading the team in scoring (17.5 PPG) as well as in assists (66).
  • The Skyhawks have a +1 rebounding margin for the season and are led off the glass by Chuol Deng's 8.0 RPG.
