Mountaineers Drop Home Match Against Fort Lewis

GUNNISON, Colo.  The Western Colorado women's volleyball team returned to Paul Wright Gym on Tuesday night for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) matchup against Fort Lewis College. The Mountaineers battled with the Skyhawks throughout the match and continued to fight until the final point, but ultimately fell to Fort Lewis, 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Fort Lewis Skyhawks came out of the gates strong in the first set, jumping out to an early 7-1 lead. Western battled back and chipped away at the deficit throughout the frame, but Fort Lewis was able to maintain control and take the opening set, 25-16.
  • The second set saw a much more even battle, with both teams trading points throughout the frame. Western put together a few runs of its own and kept the Skyhawks within reach. Fort Lewis responded with a small run in the middle of the set before the Mountaineers continued to fight back. The Skyhawks ultimately edged Western, 25-21, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Maggie Legg led the Mountaineers offensively, recording a team-high 10 kills. Emily Robins added seven kills, while Karease Broeker chipped in six as Western continued to battle at the net.
  • Anuhea Ka'alele paced the Mountaineers in assists, finishing with 16 on the night, while Olivia Moore added 13 assists to help lead the Western offense.
  • With their backs against the wall, the Mountaineers came out firing in the third set. Both teams traded points throughout the frame, with Fort Lewis grabbing an early advantage before Western battled back to regain the lead. The set remained tightly contested down the stretch, with the two teams eventually knotted up at 23-23. Fort Lewis managed to score the final two points, taking the third set 26-24 and securing the 3-0 match victory.
  • Defensively, Ka'alele led the Mountaineers with nine digs, while Galatia Andrew followed closely with eight. Moore added seven digs as Western continued to battle through long rallies and keep the pressure on the Skyhawks throughout the match.
