Mountaineers Struggle on the Road Against Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  The Western Colorado women's volleyball team opened its two-match road trip on Friday night, traveling to Grand Junction to take on Colorado Mesa University. The Mountaineers battled throughout the match and showed strong fight against the Mavericks, but Colorado Mesa ultimately came away with a straight-set victory. 

Western continued to compete until the final point as it looked to gain momentum against one of the top teams in the RMAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Western Colorado volleyball team battled Colorado Mesa on Friday night but ultimately fell to the Mavericks in three sets. The Mountaineers fought hard throughout the match, showing flashes of momentum and competing until the final point.
  • Western came out strong in the opening set, staying within striking distance through the first 10 points. Colorado Mesa then found its rhythm midway through the frame, using a strong run to build a commanding lead. The Mavericks held on to take the opening set, 25-16.
  • The second set saw Colorado Mesa continue to build momentum as the Mavericks controlled the set from the opening serve. Mesa went on to take the second frame, 25-6, putting Western in a 2-0 hole heading into the third set.
  • Despite the deficit, the Mountaineers came out with energy in the third set, jumping out to an early 4-2 advantage. Colorado Mesa responded by regaining momentum and taking the lead midway through the set. Western continued to battle and put together a run of its own late in the frame, but the Mountaineers were unable to close the gap, falling 25-17.
  • Maggie Legg led the Mountaineers offensively with a match-high six kills, while Andrea Torres added five kills on the night. Olivia Moore helped direct the offense and led Western with seven assists, while Anuhea Ka'alele contributed six assists.
  • Defensively, Legg and Galatia Andrew anchored the back row, recording a team-high 10 digs apiece. At the net, Kyra Kidd made her presence felt throughout the match, finishing with three blocks to lead the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, October 3, as they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to take on Westminster University. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
