Mountaineers Overpower Millersville in Three-Set Sweep

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.,   Coach Morales-Jones and the Mountaineers drop their first match but bounced back to earn their first win with a sweep on Saturday evening.

WESTERN VS JAMESTOWN
  • Western Colorado grabbed the first point of the match when senior Olive Rolseth forced an early Jamestown attack error. Moments later, junior Kyra Kidd put down a kill from junior Kaira Willits, followed by a sophomore Galatia Andrew service ace, cutting the deficit to 4–5.
  • Western rallied again behind back-to-back points from junior Breanna Nohava and Willits, who tied the frame at 11–11 with a kill through the block. Rolseth then hammered another swing from the outside, bringing Western within two at 13–15.
  • Late in the set, Rolseth struck again with a kill at 18–20, and Nohava combined with junior Liv Marshall for a block that kept the Mountaineers close before Jamestown held on.
  • The Mountaineers opened the second strong as Willits served an ace to start the frame, followed by Nohava's kill from the middle. At 7–10, Rolseth buried a cross-court swing, then teamed with Kidd, who added a kill and a service ace to tie the score at 10–10.
  • Western surged again midway through the set when Marshall delivered a pair of kills, trimming the Jamestown led to 12–13. Moments later, Rolseth delivered another finish and Andrew dropped in her third ace of the match, pulling the Mountaineers within 16–17. Despite the push, Jamestown managed a late run to close the set.
  • The Mountaineers came alive in the third, storming to a 3–0 lead behind Rolseth's opening kill, a Jamestown error forced by Marshall, and a quick strike from freshman setter Anuhea Ka'alele. Western extended its lead to 7–1 when Kidd ripped a kill followed by Andrew's ace, energizing the bench.
  • Jamestown battled back, but Western refused to let up. Rolseth tallied back-to-back kills, and Marshall added another to make it 12–8. Later, Ka'alele's ace pushed the Mountaineers ahead 15–10.
  • The set tightened late, but Western continued to counterpunch. At 20–21, Rolseth added her 13th kill, then Andrew served another tough ball to even the score. On set point, Rolseth blasted a kill to tie it at 24–24, giving Western a chance to extend the match.
  • Though Jamestown escaped with the final two points, the Mountaineers left the court with momentum and belief in their ability to compete at the highest level.

 WESTERN VS MILLERSVILLE
  • Western stormed out after a slow start, with Marshall and Rolseth combining for kills to give the Mountaineers a 4–2 lead. Senior Emalie Depew and Rolseth extended the advantage, forcing a 6–4 scoreline.
  • Millersville fought back, but Western answered. Kidd hammered a kill at 7–9, then junior Paige Coley delivered at the net to close the gap to 9–11. A run of four straight points, capped by Rolseth and Nohava teaming for a block, tied the set at 14–14.
  • From there, it was a back-and-forth battle. Marshall put down a kill to make it 19–20, and Depew answered with a clutch swing at 22–22. Facing set point, Rolseth blasted another kill at 24–24. After trading points, Kidd powered down back-to-back kills before Marshall sealed the set at 29–27 with a kill from Ka'alele.
  • The second frame was all Mountaineers. Western jumped out to a 5–0 lead behind Rolseth, Depew, and Kidd, forcing Millersville to call timeout. The dominance continued with Rolseth scoring again at 7–1, followed by Marshall's kill to make it 13–8.
  • The Mountaineers went on a decisive 7–0 run, highlighted by junior Breanna Nohava and Kidd combining for a block and Rolseth's kill at 17–9. Marshall then delivered back-to-back kills, and Nohava scored at the net to push it to 24–14. On set point, Marshall finished off the frame 25–14 with another swing, putting Western firmly in control.
  • Western showed no signs of letting up in the third. Marshall opened with a kill from Willits and followed with a service ace, giving the Mountaineers a 3–1 lead. Rolseth scored twice more, and Depew added a kill, extending the advantage to 7–1.
  • The Mountaineers' serve proved deadly, as Ka'alele dropped in an ace at 10–3 and Kidd followed with consecutive aces to make it 15–5. Nohava added another point off a feed from Ka'alele, and Marshall put Western up 20–11.
  • With momentum on their side, Jacobson delivered her first kill at 23–12, before Coley scored off a set from Andrew. On match point, Nohava slammed the final kill to close it 25–14, giving Western the sweep.
 
NET NOTES
  • Across the two matches against Jamestown and Millersville, several Western Colorado players stood out as top performers. Rolseth led the attack, recording 13 kills against Jamestown and adding 14 more in the victory over Millersville.
  • At the net, Depew and Nohava were defensive leaders, each finishing with three blocks against Millersville.
  • In the setting role, Willits paced the offense with 29 assists versus Millersville, while Ka'alele contributed steadily across both matches.
  • Andrew anchored the defense, highlighted by her 14 digs against Millersville, while Marshall added double-digit digs as well.
  • From the service line, Andrew tallied multiple aces against Jamestown, with Ka'alele and Kidd also delivering aces in the Millersville match.
  • Overall, Rolseth and Marshall drove the offense, Willits and Ka'alele distributed effectively, and Andrew provided strong back-row play, giving Western balance across both contests.
