Mesa Too Much for Mountaineers in Their Final Game of the Season

Grand Junction, Colo.,   The Western Colorado Men's Basketball team concludes season with a road loss to Colorado Mesa, Saturday afternoon by a score of 71-49.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers were first on the board as junior Andrew Reichart finished a fast break layup 2-0. CMU answered with an alley-oop dunk 2-2. A three by senior Amar Rivers broke the tie 5-2. Two consecutive scores gave Mesa their first advantage 7-5.
  • Reichart scored another but CMU had a 15-7. Sophomore Tyler Halligan exchanged layups with the Mavericks 17-9. Junior Christian Still hit a free throw to put WCU in double-digits. With ten minutes to play in the first half, junior Ty Buckmon finished around the rim, making it a seven-point game 19-12.
  • The next four minutes, Mesa put up nine 28-12 and did not allow any points against. The Mountaineers ended their scoring drought as senior Nalik Veasley found Reichart wide open for two 28-14. WCU hit a few more shots but CMU went into halftime winning, 32-23.
  • Mesa came out of locker room with the same offensive and defensive momentum. In the first four-minutes the Mavericks elevated their lead 42-27.
  • Senior Kade Juelfs and Halligan sunk threes, but Mesa continued to finish around the rim 50-33. Still took the ball to the rim then knocked down a deep three 50-38.
  • In the final five minutes of the game the Mavericks took their lead and ran with it, defeating WCU 71-49.

COURT NOTES 
  • Reichart lead the Mountaineers with 11 points, going 4-8 from the field and 3-4 from the charity stripe. Halligan and Still each contributed 8, Rivers finished with 7 and Juelfs had 6.
  • Five Mountaineers recorded a steal. Rivers led with 3 assists. Veasley pulled down 4 boards and Halligan had 3.
  • WCU shot 34.7% from the field, 21.4% from three and 69.2% from the charity stripe.
