GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado had the better of the ThunderWolves in the first half, but seventh-ranked Colorado State Pueblo flipped the script in the second half before kicking a game-winning field goal on the final play of the game for a 24-21 upset of the No. 5 Mountaineers Saturday afternoon.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: CSU Pueblo def. Western, 24-21
Records: Western 8-1 overall (6-1 RMAC), CSUP 8-1 (7-0)
Location: MOJO Field at Mountaineer Bowl at the Rady Family Sports Complex, Gunnison, Colo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountaineers dominated the first 20 minutes of action, scoring on a Drew Nash to Damien Nevil 2-yard scoring pass late in the opening quarter, then finishing off a drive in the early minutes of the second quarter with a 1-yard Nevil plunge into the endzone, while limiting the Pack to 31 yards of offense over its first four possessions.
- The end of that fourth CSUP possession added to Western's scoring as Jevon Young blocked Regan Baker's punt, scooped it up himself and galloped in for a 36-yard touchdown return to elevated Western's lead to 21-0 halfway through the second quarter.
- Pueblo finally got on the scoreboard on its next possession, going 75 yards in a quick 2 minutes and 31 seconds, allowing the Pack to enter the halftime break trailing only 21-7.
- The Mountaineers totaled 193 yards of offense in the half while holding CSUP to 143 yards, including only 30 yards on the ground.
- Halfway through the third quarter the game's complexion changed on one play. Backed up deep in Pueblo territory, CSUP quarterback Roman Fuller hit Marcellus Honeycutt Jr. on a deep ball along the left sideline for an 88-yard catch and run touchdown that halved the Pack's deficit.
- Western's offense would have trouble getting untracked across the whole second half, punting on its first four possessions while CSUP's would maintain the momentum from the Honeycutt Jr. touchdown, tying the score late in the third on a four-play, 45-yard touchdown drive.
- Pueblo was held to just 25 yards on its initial fourth-quarter possession, punting the ball to Western with 9:55 to play. The Mountaineers would drive down to the CSUP 30 before the drive stalled and would line up for a go-head field goal with 4:01 remaining.
- The attempt was blocked, handing the ball back to the Pack, which moved down the field on the ground behind Kiahn Martinez and Devin Cross, the backbreaking run coming from Cross who scampered 30 yards to the Mountaineer 29.
- A Fuller pass for 20 yards three plays later set up kicker Jackson Smith for a 32-yard game-winning kick as time expired.
- MOJO NOTES
- Western added only 124 yards of offense to its first-half total (193), but CSUP rang up 279 yards in the second half to nearly double its first-half output (143).
- Nash would finish with 203 yards and 1 touchdown through the air while adding 44 yards on the ground. CSUP's Fuller threw for 317 yards and a touchdown with 21 yards rushing.
- Honeycutt Jr. and teammate Reggie Retzlaff would lead all receivers in the game, Honeycutt Jr. totaling 144 yard and Retzlaff chipping in with 89. Jace Perez had 45 receiving yards to lead the Mountaineer receiving corps.
