1st Half Goals Too Much to Overcome at #22 Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  A first-half deficit was too large to overcome Sunday afternoon as visiting Western Colorado dropped a 4-0 decision to host and 22nd-ranked Colorado Mesa University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference soccer action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers were in a hole at the halftime break but got four of its seven shots on frame during second half action, including one that had to be cleared from the goal line by a CMU defender, while excluding one shot late in the second half that caromed off the crossbar.
  • The Mavericks put Western in that halftime deficit with early goals, in the 12th and 16th minutes, and adding ones in the 38th and 44th for a 4-0 advantage going into the break.
  • CMU continued pressuring in the second half, accumulating 14 of its 26 total shots, but Western goalkeeper Ashlyn Fitzpatrick came up with four of her six saves to keep the Mavs scoreless over the final 45 minutes.
