Mountaineers Win 7th Straight over Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo.  Fifth-ranked Western Colorado broke out to a three-touchdown lead off the arm of quarterback Josiah Roy and never let host Fort Lewis College gain momentum in downing the Skyhawks by a score of 49-10 Saturday afternoon in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game.

The win was the Mountaineers' seventh in a row over Fort Lewis.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western def. Fort Lewis, 49-10
Records: Western 5-0 overall (3-0 RMAC), Fort Lewis 1-4 (0-3)
Location: Ray Dennison Memorial Field, Durango, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Western took just five plays to score on its opening possession, getting a 31-yard scoring pass from Roy to DJ Allen Jr. to open the floodgates.
  • The Skyhawks forced a three and out on the Mountaineers' next possession, but Roy was back at it again on the ensuing one, following a Logan White interception that gave Western a short field. Three plays after the turnover Roy connected with Caden Measner down the middle for a 10-yard scoring strike.
  • After the defense limited FLC to two yards and then a punt, Roy engineered a nine-play, 61 yard drive that ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Dixon.
  • The Mountaineers went into the halftime break leading 21-3, then doubled their total with three touchdowns in the third quarter. Quinn Bailey sandwiched a pair of scoring runs around Allen Jr.'s second scoring reception to push the advantage to 42-3.
  • The Skyhawks finally found paydirt on a 58-yad scoring pass early in the fourth quarter, but surrendered one more score late in the game with Joey Fox blocked an FLC punt that was scooped up and carried four yards into the end zone by White.
TURF NOTES
  • Roy ended his afternoon connecting on 19 of 28 throws for four touchdowns and 245 yards.
  • Bailey led all rushers with 77 yards and his two scores while Allen Jr. led all receivers with 68 yards and two touchdowns.
  • The Mountaineers put up 413 yards of offense while their defense limited FLC to just 210 yards, including only 58 on the ground.
  • Ian Loomis was credited with six tackles, including one of Western's five sacks on the day.
  • The Western secondary helped limit the Skyhawks to just 152 yards through the air, getting interceptions from White and Donnell Colbert.
