Mountaineers Come Up Short Versus Yellow Jackets

Spearfish, S.D.,   The Western Colorado Men's Basketball team fall to Black Hills State 87-64 on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Yellow Jackets attacked first with a pull up jumper 2-0. As he was going in for a layup, Junior Andrew Reichart was fouled 2-1. WCU took a 5-2 lead after scoring back-to-back layups 5-2. BHSU answered with a three tying the game 5-5. Senior Amar Rivers sunk a pull up jumper to win the draw 7-5.
  • Minutes later, the Yellow Jackets gained a 13-9 edge. Senior Nalik Veasley earned his first basket of the day to make it a two-point game 13-11. BHSU traded points with senior Spencer Wright and junior Jamel Hollins 23-19, then Reichart hit a hook shot 23-21.
  • With under five minutes to play sophomore Tyler Halligan and Rivers earned two consecutive baskets to make it a one-point game 31-30. BHSU missed a three, allowing WCU to gain another offensive possession. Senior Kade Juelfs was fouled, going two-for-two from the charity stripe and taking the lead 32-31. Points were traded in the final moments; the Yellow Jackets went into the locker room with a 39-37 advantage.
  • Rivers was immediately fouled to begin the second half 39-38. Although Hollins added a bucket, BHSU went on an eight-point run 47-40. Juelfs and Rivers each hit a shot but, again, the Yellow Jackets went on a run, elevating their lead 59-43. As Veasley pulled down an offensive board he was fouled 59-45.
  • BHSU kept knocking down shots resulting in a 21-point edge 68-47 with ten minutes remaining. The next couple of minutes, points were traded but the Yellow Jackets kept their lead 71-56. The Mountaineers continued to battle but the Yellow Jackets lead was too strong. When time ran out, BHSU won the game 87-64.
 
COURT NOTES
  • Three Mountaineers scored 11 points, Hollins going 5-9 from the field and 1-1 from the charity stripe, Juelfs going 3-5 from in the paint, 1-1 from three and 4-4 from the free throw line, then Halligan going 5-7 from the field, and 1-2 from three. Rivers also scored double digits with 10 and contributed 4 assists.
  • Hollins led the rebounding with 5 boards followed by senior Trey Anderson and Reichart each with 4. Halligan recorded 2 blocks. 
  • WCU shot 47.2% from the field, 18.2% from three and 63.2% from the charity stripe. The Mountaineers had 7 assists, 21 bench points, 3 steals and 9 second chance points.
