GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado athletics and the Mountaineer Athletic Association on Saturday, April 6 hosted the 21st Annual Sam Boyd Crab & Steak Feed and Auction, with the capacity crowd showing its support by generating over $80,000 toward Mountaineer student-athlete scholarships.
Sponsored again this year by Lacy Construction and United Companies, the annual gathering directly supports scholarship needs for Western student-athletes and is the largest annual single fundraising event for Mountaineer athletics.
Hosted in the Mountaineer Field House and led by emcee Loren Ahonen, the supportive crowd of 500 patrons participated in raffle games, a silent auction, and a live auction led by 35-year and award-winning auctioneer Scott Shuman.
The exciting live auction included items such as tickets to a Denver Broncos game; a Gold Water Float down the Gunnison River with Mountaineer head wrestling coach Charlie Pipher; a seven-day Florida Beach Getaway at a home in Englewood, Florida; a travel trip with the Western Colorado football team to either the West Texas A&M game or the Black Hills State Game; a date for four to play the course at The Club at Crested Butte; an all-you-can-eat private event for 25 at 5B's BBQ; a three-night waterfront condo vacation for two with a guided fishing trip in Rockport, Texas; all-access passes to the 2024 football game at Texas A&M against visiting LSU; and a Kayo Bull 200 ATV.
Two other prizes that were awarded were for best table decoration and best costumes reflective of the event's theme, the Summer Olympics.Â
5B's BBQ and Shondeck Financial Services won the table decoration award, and the duo of Karen Morgan and Eileen Desch captured the best costumes prize.
