Mountaineers Battle in First Half, but Fall to Mavericks in Season Finale

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  After being down just four-points going into half time Western Colorado 74-55, fell in its final game of the season to No. 7 Colorado Mesa as Jonathan McCloud tallied a team-high 11 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • It was a close first half as Western Colorado and Colorado Mesa as there were four lead changes, but it was the Mavericks, who shot 44% from the field, with a 29-25 lead going into halftime.  
  • Kade Juelfs led the Mountaineers with six points in the first half, while Spencer Wright finished the first 20 minutes with five points. For the Mavericks, Trevor Baskin and Ethan Menzies each recorded six points in the first half.  
  • Colorado Mesa's defense held the Mountaineers to 34% shooting from the field in each half, but only allowed the Mountaineers to shoot from beyond the arc just eight times in the first.  
  • The Mavericks went 12-for-27 from the field in the first 20 minutes as they adapted to the Mountaineers pace of play, but then got off to a rocket start in the second half shooting 18-for-30 for 60% shooting from the field.  
  • Western Colorado did not score quickly in the second half but then Juelfs scored off a CMU turnover to make it a 31-27 score in favor of the home team. The Mountaineers did not score for another three minutes as their opponent extended their lead to eight.  
  • Colorado Mesa maintained a double-digit lead consistently throughout the second half, including its largest lead of 22 points with 34 seconds left. Wright closed out the contest with a 3-pointer for the Mountaineers. Jonathan McCloud scored 11-points for the Mountaineers off the bench, which was a team-high. 

COURT NOTES 

  • With his team-high 11 points McCloud went 4-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. All the senior's points came in the second half and were part of the Mountaineers 30-points off the bench. Kade Juelfs also scored in double digits going 5-for-19 from the field for 10 points.  
  • Defensively, Trevin Lieck, Christian Still and Andrew Reichart registered five rebounds each with Still recording four defensive boards.
