Mountaineers Share the Wealth in Final Game of 2024

Gunnison, Colo.,   The Western Colorado Men's Basketball team wins their final game of 2024, defeating Northwest Indian College by a score of 88-55.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Back-to-back layups by junior Andrew Reichart gave WCU a 4-0 edge. NWIC was sent to the charity stripe, adding their first points of the day 4-2. Senior Kade Juelfs and junior Jamel Hollins each sunk a free throw to put the Mountaineers up 6-2.
  • Reichart with jumper in the paint then senior Spencer Wright with two threes, in a row, followed by a deep three from Hollins gave WCU a 17-4 lead.
  • Off a WCU turnover, the Eagles earned a bucket which was matched by sophomore Tyler Halligan 19-6. Junior Ty Buckmon and senior Trey Anderson saw their first scores of the day, elevating the Mountaineers score 24-11.
  • With under ten to play, senior Daric Conkright was sent to the line, adding a point for the Mountaineers 29-13. Minutes later, WCU went up 39-17 as senior Amar Rivers knocked down a three. NWIC matched it with a deep three, seeing the score at 39-20.
  • The Mountaineers went up by twenty-two points as junior Christian Still sunk a shot from behind the arch 42-20. The Mountaineers controlled the entire half, heading into the locker room with a 50-24 advantage.
  • The Eagles came out of halftime putting up 11-points compared to the Mountaineers six 56-35. The next sets for the respective teams were tough. The teams had a hard time putting the ball in the basket.
  • With under ten minutes to play, sophomore Tyler Halligan scored his tenth point, moving the Mountaineers to a 62-38 lead. Still completed a three-point play, answered with a layup by NWIC 65-41. WCU got in a groove, hitting shot after shot, going up 82-47 with under five minutes to play.  
  • The Mountaineers did not let up, they competed on both sides of the ball to defeat Northwest Indian College 88-55.
 COURT NOTES
  • Reichart led the Mountaineer offense with 14 points, going 7-10 from the field. Halligan followed with 13 points going 6-8 from the field and 1-4 from the charity stripe. Wright and Buckmon finished with 9. Wright went 3-4 from the field and from behind the arch. Hollins and Still ended with 8, freshman Luke Wagstaff with 7, Juelfs and Anderson with 6, Rivers with 5 and Conkright 3.
  • Reichart and Hollins brought down 9 rebounds each. Freshman Dawlton Grant was next with 8, Wagstaff (7) and Halligan (6).
  • Juelfs earned 5 assists, followed by Rivers who had 4 then Conkright with 3. Hollins, Buckmon and Wagstaff each earned 2 steals.
  • WCU shot 46.5% from the field, 26.7% from three and 63.6% from the charity stripe.
