Mountaineers Stay Resilient Against Roadrunners

   Four Mountaineers earn double-digit points in a close contest against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Metropolitan State University Denver on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Juniors Andrew Reichart, Jamel Hollins and senior Amar Rivers scored the first buckets for WCU. Four minutes into the game the score was 8-6 in favor of MSU. The Roadrunners took the reins, going up 18-6.
  • The Mountaineers kept taking open looks, eventually junior Ty Buckmon and Trevin Lieck earned baskets putting WCU in double-digits 18-10. MSU kept connecting on offense, taking a 26-10 advantage.
  • Senior Trey Anderson subbed into the game with a hot hand, hitting back-to-back threes making it a ten-point game 26-16. MSU answered with a jumper in the paint, but Buckmon found Rivers on the parameter for three 28-19.
  • With under ten to play, the Roadrunners lead 32-19. A turn around jumper by Rivers and two in a row makes from behind the arch by Anderson made it a five-point contest 32-27.  In the final four minutes of the half, MSU gained their ten-point lead back 39-29.
  •  Senior Kade Juelfs, with two consecutive points in the paint and a made free throw gave the Mountaineers momentum 39-34. Buckmon, Reichart and Leick added to WCU's score sending the Mountaineers into halftime down three 42-39.
  • Reichart opened the second half, finishing around the rim off a pass from Hollins; MSU matched 44-41. Three minutes in, the Mountaineers got within one 50-49.
  • A jumper by Juelfs allowed Western to take their first lead of the game 51-50. A twelve-point run by the Roadrunners allowed them to take back their edge 62-51.
  • A scoreless three minutes went by, Anderson with a solo bucket then Juelfs with a steal, who found Hollins then Rivers under the rim for a 62-55 score. MSU put up more buckets taking a 79-64 edge with under three to play.
  • MSU was able to sneak in a few more buckets before time ran out, resulting in an 81-64 win over the Mountaineers.
 
COURT NOTES
  • Rivers earned 17 points, going 5-8 from the field and 4-7 from three. He combined his points with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and 3 blocks. Anderson followed in points with 14 going 4-7 from behind the arch, Juelfs put up 12, with 3 steals, 2 assists and 3 rebounds. Reichart also finished with double digits with 10. Hollins led the Mountaineers on the boards with 8 and assists with 4.
  • The Mountaineers shot 41.5% from the field, 29.6% from behind the arch and 25% from the charity stripe.
  • WCU finished with more assists then MSU 15-13. Western earned 21 bench points, 13 fast break points, 34 points in the paint and 6 second chance points.
