FARMINGTON, N.M. Needing a win in the season finale to qualify for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason soccer tournament, Western Colorado came up short Wednesday evening in a 4-0 loss to Fort Lewis College.
The game was originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on the Skyhawks' home field, but winter weather complications at Dirks Field in Durango, Colo., forced the game an hour south, to Farmington High School where the game began at 5 p.m.
JUST THE FACTS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Overcoming the last-minute scheduling issue was one thing, but a Fort Lewis goal only four minutes into the first half created a momentum swing that proved too difficult from which to recover.
- Cianna Thomas went for the equalizer not quite four minutes later, but her shot from the top corner of the box was blocked by a Skyhawks defender.
- A one-touch shot from the middle of the box by FLC's Jenna Salazar three minutes later gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute, further swinging the momentum away from Western's playoff hopes.
- Western got its first shot on goal in the 14th minute, as Jordan Welsh cranked a one-time from the top of the box off a Skyhawk turnover, but the effort to halve the deficit was scooped up by goalkeeper Riley Bravin to keep Western off the scoreboard.
- The finishing blow, though, came in the final minute of the half, when a turnover nearing midfield led to a 25-yard rocket from Ashlyn Salas found the bottom right corner to allow the Skyhawks to take a 3-0 advantage into halftime.
- The Mountaineers came back with desperation coming out of the break, getting a pair of shots on frame in the first five minutes, adding another in the 54th minute, and putting two more on goal in the 60th, but each time Katlyn Rosenbaum, who took over for Bravin to start the half, was able to repel Western's efforts.
- Western would finish with nine of its 11 shots making it on goal in the second half, but it couldn't break through. Fort Lewis in the 88th minute would add one more goal, upping the final to 4-0 and ending the Mountaineers' season.
- Rosenbaum would lead all keepers with eight saves, Western's Aubree Orosco would make four during her 90 minutes between the pipes, and Bravin added a pair of first-half saves to FLC's shutout.
