FAIRBANKS, Alaska  Western Colorado used an 11-3 closing run to take the lead into halftime, then finished off a 70-59 non-conference win Friday night over host Alaska-Fairbanks in Mountaineer senior
Rachel Cockman's return to her home state.Â
The game was the second matchup on the opening day of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational, following a Western Oregon 74-70 victory over Corban (Ore.) University.Â

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The Mountaineers and Nanooks headed into the second quarter knotted at 13-13, Western trailing through most of the first until a Chloe Daniels layup nearing the final minute of the period.Â
- Four lead changes in the early minutes of the second had UAF leading 23-22, but a Penelope Urquhart jumper put Western ahead, as it turned out, for good.Â
- The Mountaineers added a 3-pointer from Jayde Tschritter and two from Jayda Maves in the final three minutes to forge a seven-point halftime lead, 33-26.Â
- Western led by as many as eight and as few as one point during third-quarter action, but again closed a quarter decisively, finishing with an 8-2 flourish to advance into the final quarter with a 48-41 advantage.Â
- Tschritter drained another trey nearing the midpoint of the fourth to push the lead to double digits, 57-47, but the Nanooks halved that deficit as the clock ticked past the two minute mark.Â
- As in the end of the first half, though, Western regained command of the game, hit five of six free throws down the stretch and closed out an 11-point win to hand the Nanooks their first loss of the season.Â
COURT NOTESÂ
- Cockman, who hails from Cantwell, Alaska, south of Fairbanks, tied for team high scoring honors with Tschritter, each scoring 12 points for the Mountaineers.Â
- Tschritter was the game leader from long range, scoring all of her points from beyond the arc on a 4-for-11 night.Â
- Ivey Schmidt controlled the Western attack, dishing out four assists while coming down with a game-high nine rebounds.Â
- In the defensive end, Cockman and Brooklyn Seymour each collected three steals and one block.Â
- UAF's Kayla Johnson led all scorers with 19 points.Â
- The Mountaineers shot 47 percent from the floor and 35 percent from behind the 3-point line, while the Nanooks were limited to a 38 percent night overall and just 29 percent from long range.Â
- Western was aggressive in its offensive end, drawing aggressive in return that resulted in 19 trips to the free throw line. It his 13 of those opportunities, while the Nanooks only went to the stripe 5 times, though they hit 4 of those chances.Â

Western closes out the Invitational Saturday at 5 p.m. MT against Western Oregon in the first meeting between the two programs.Â
