Mountaineers Come Close in Match Against Regis

Gunnison, Colo.   The Western Colorado volleyball team hosted Regis University on Saturday October 26.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rangers earned the first score, but a 5-point Mountaineer run put them on top 5-1. The respective teams traded points, moving the score 8-4. Regis went on a run of their own to regain the lead 9-8. WCU tied the game once again 9-9 but Regis broke the draw and went on another charge 14-9. The deficit ranged between one or two points until RU jumped out to a 21-13 advantage. The Mountaineers kept fighting, adding points but Regis took set one 25-18.
  • A 2-0 edge by RU began set two. WCU put up scores to make it a three-point game 6-3. The Mountaineers kept the momentum and went up 8-6. Regis regained their lead seeing the score at 12-10. The battle continued, the two teams going back and forth, lead changes and ties. The Mountaineers went on a small run going up 19-16. Regis' strong offense put up nine points in a row to win set two 25-19.
  • The Mountaineers quickly took a 5-0 edge over RU. After kills by seniors Kennedy Kelly and Seyun Park WCU went up 7-3. The Rangers were resilient, tying the set 9-9. WCU won out 10-9 but RU earned the next point 10-10. The set saw a few more ties until RU jumped out to a 19-14 lead. WCU fought back eventually seeing the score at 24-24. Regis earned two kills in a row to take the set 26-24 and the game 3-0.
NET NOTES
  • Leading the team in kills was Park with 12. Following was Kelly with 10 then junior Olive Rolseth with six. Kennedy and Rolseth respectfully contributed three service aces.
  • Setting up the offense was senior Nur Turkmenoglu with 33 assists. She also contributed 3 kills and 4 digs.
  • Leading the defense was sophomore Chinaru Inoue with 8 digs. Right behind was freshman Grace Devall with 7 digs. Sophomore Kyra Kidd added to the defense leading in solo blocks with 2.

The Mountaineers are back in action on Tuesday October 29 at home, hosting South Dakota Mines for an RMAC matchup that begins at 6pm.
