Mountaineers Take Down Yellow Jackets

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kills by seniors Kennedy Kelly, Nur Turkmenoglu, Seyun Park and junior Pelin Aksoy gave the Mountaineers an early 6-1 lead. BHSU added a few points but were only ever able to get within a few points of WCU. The score at 14-13 in favor of Western Colorado, a six-point run put them on top 20-14. The Mountaineers kept attacking, winning the last two points on a kill by sophomore Kyra Kidd and a service ace from Aksoy 25-16.
  • The Yellow Jackets struck first but an attack error tied the score 1-1. BHSU jumped out to a 10-4 advantage and did not let up. The Mountaineers came within two 12-10 after two service aces by Turkmenoglu and a kill by Park. The respective teams traded the next few points. WCU trailed resulting in BHSU taking set two 25-21.
  • A tie match score made the third set equally important to both teams. WCU with lots of energy scored first. The Yellow jackets tied the score 4-4 then took a 5-4 advantage. The Mountaineers were persistent, taking a 13-6 lead. A few points were added by the Yellow Jackets, but WCU stayed on top the entire set, resulting in a 25-13 win.
  • The fourth set began with a 3-0 edge form BHSU. The Yellow Jackets went up 6-3 but the Mountaineers came back to tie the game at 11 a piece. WCU earned their first lead going up 13-12. WCU with immense amount of purpose went up 20-13. BHSU added a few more points but were no match for Western Colorado. The Mountaineers took the fourth set 25-18 and won the game 3-1.
 
NET NOTES
  • Park paved the way on offense with 15 kills followed by Aksoy with 13, junior Olive Rolseth with 10 and Kelly with nine.
  • Turkmenoglu set up her teammates earning 44 assists. She also contributed two service aces, seven digs, two blocks and four kills.
  • Sophomore Chinaru Inoue lead the defense with 23 digs. Also contributing to the defense were senior Myles Hilbert with 14 digs and sophomore Kacee Garcia with 11 digs.
