Roadrunners' Early Momentum Leads to Outlasting Mountaineers

DENVER, Colo. Western Colorado held Metropolitan State University of Denver to just 30 points in the first half. But momentum was on the Roadrunners side as the Mountaineers shot just 32% from the field all night and fell 67-38 on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Brayden Maldanado registered the Roadrunners first seven points to put them ahead 7-2 two minutes and 45 seconds into the game. The Roadrunners then kept that momentum throughout the rest of the 40-minute contest as they did not give up the lead. After Andrew Reichart drained a layup to score the Mountaineers first points 45 seconds in, Western Colorado did not score again until around the 14-minute mark.  
  • After a media time out MSU Denver extended its lead to 12 by a pair of free-throws before KJ Garrett got in on the action and drained a jumper. Xavier Harris then responded with a jumper in the paint shortening the Roadrunners' lead to 12. The Mountaineers went into halftime down 30-13 and shooting 27% from the field.  
  • Harris scored the first points of the second half as the Mountaineers tried to shift the momentum back their way. Mar ibn Abdur-Razaaq then went to the free throw line for the Roadrunners and extended his team's lead to 16.  
  • Western Colorado scored 25-points in the second half led by Tyler Halligan who registered 11 points in the final 20 minutes of the game. The Roadrunners held the Mountaineers to just 37-percent shooting from the field in the second half.  
COURT NOTES 
  • Tyler Halligan led the Mountaineers with 13 points while going 6-for-9 from the field. Spencer Wright and Trevin Lieck each recorded six points for the Mountaineers Saturday night.  
  • Trevin Lieck and Andrew Reichart each collected six rebounds for the Mountaineers. Lieck recorded five defensive boards, while Reichart registered all six of his rebounds defensively. Reichart also had one blocked shot, while Halligan had two steals on the night.  
  • UP NEXT 
Western Colorado returns home to Gunnison, Colo., to take on No. 7 Colorado Mesa on Tuesday, January 30. Tip off between the Mountaineers and Mavericks is set for 7 p.m.
