Mountaineers to Take on Orediggers, Roadrunners This Weekend

GOLDEN, Colo.  Western Colorado will travel to Denver, Colo., this weekend to face No. 14 Colorado School of Mines on Friday, January 26 at 7:30 p.m.  They will then head to Denver, Colo., to face Metropolitan State University of Denver on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.  

The Mountaineers have already faced Mines this season, back in December, where the Orediggers won the contest 79-61. Kade Juelfs led Western Colorado with 18 points against the Orediggers, while Jamel Hollins had 14 points.  Amar Rivers led the Mountaineers defensive efforts with seven rebounds and three steals. Western Colorado has not played the Roadrunners yet this season but fell 77-70 on the road last season.  

The men's basketball coaches will take part in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers week.  

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats 

  • The Mountaineers (6-10, 3-7) are coming off back-to-back wins over CSU Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands, which marks the first time the team has won back-to-back conference games since the 2021-22 season.  Against CSU Pueblo, Western Colorado made 47% of their shots from the field, while Juelfs led the team with 22 points in the 79-72 win. Christian Still registered a career-high 20 points on Saturday night in the Mountaineers 76-65 win. The Mountaineers held a 12-point lead going into halftime and pulled off their sixth win of the season.  

  • Juelfs continues to lead the Mountaineers offensively with 12.4 points per game with 48-percent shooting from the field. As a team, the Mountaineers are recording 64.1 points per game while shooting 42% from the field.  

  • Jamel Hollins leads the Mountaineers with 5.7 rebounds per game this season throughout 13 games this season. Andrew Reichart recorded 4.2 rebounds per game, including 51 defensive boards this season. Xavier Harris is tied with Juelfs for the team lead in steals with 13, while Rivers has tallied 10 blocks. Western Colorado is ninth in the conference in team defensive rebounds averaging 24.9 per game.  

OREDIGGERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats  

  • Colorado School of Mines (17-3, 11-1 RMAC) is on a 13-game winning streak heading into this weekend since its lone conference loss to Colorado Mesa. Their latest win was a two-point 67-65 win over MSU Denver on Tuesday night. Majok Deng led the Orediggers with 18 points, while Alex Romack had 10 points. Sam Beskind led his team defensively with 12 rebounds, while also registering 8 points.  

  • The Orediggers have averaged 75.5 points per game, while holding their opponents to 66.7 points per game. From the field, they have made 47% of their shots and are averaging 27.5 points per game. 

  • Majok Deng leads the team with 15 points per game, which ranks 12th in the conference while also making 40% of his shots from the field. Cade Mankle has registered 11.3 points per game while making 49% of his shots from the field. Alex Romack rounds out the offensive trio for the Orediggers, with a team-leading 67-percent shooting from the field. Romack also has averaged 8.8 points per game.  

  • Romack leads the defensive efforts for his team with 7.7 rebounds per game, followed by Sam Beskind who averages 6.3 rebounds per game. Riley Schroeder contributed to the Orediggers' defense with 22 blocks, 13 steals and 3.7 rebounds per game.  

ROADRUNNERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023-24 Stats

  • MSU Denver (11-6, 5-6 RMAC) dropped its mid-week match up with Colorado School of Mines Tuesday after a win against Regis on Saturday. In Tuesday's game, the roadrunners outscored the Orediggers in the first 20 minutes 34-29 while going 15-for-27 from the field.  

  • Brayden Maldonado leads the Roadrunners' offense with 16.9 points per game, followed by Caleb McGill with 15 points per game. Mario Lacy Jr. leads the team in field goal percentage (63%) to go along with 10.8 points per game.  

  • Defensively, Lacy Jr also leads the team in rebounds per game (8.9) with 94 total defensive rebounds. Maldonado leads the Roadrunners with 31 steals while McGill's 13 blocks is also a team high.
