VB Slips in Two Matches at Mountain Lion Classic

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  It was a tough day for Mountaineer volleyball Friday at the Mountain Lion Classic as Western Colorado began the day with a 3-0 loss to No. 10 University of Nebraska-Kearney before closing out its afternoon in a 3-0 defeat to Saint Martin's (Wash.) University.

JUST THE FACTS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers played their toughest set of the day in their final set of the day, forcing six ties and twice taking the lead over Saint Martin's while trailing in the match, 2-0.
  • A 9-5 deficit was turned into an 11-10 lead with points from a block by Olive Rolseth and Seyun Park, a second touch kill from Nur Turkmenoglu, a service ace by Elizabeth Rupprecht, and a few Saints errors.
  • Saint Martin's regained the lead but Western battled back to a 14-14 tie before the Saints were able to finally break free for the set, and match victory.
  • The 8 a.m. match against No. 10 UNK did not see the same closing act, as the Lopers surrendered the lead just once, in the first set, and allowed Western to pull even only twice in the three sets.
NET NOTES
  • Rolseth finished the day with eight kills for the attack and added six block assists to lead Western's defensive efforts at the net.
  • Maggie Olson's 11 kills against UNK led the team in the opener, and Kerri Carsrud's 6 led Western in the Saint Martin's match.
  • The defense came up with 31 total digs in the Kearney match, but the Saints were able to find spaces on their attack as the Mountaineers totaled just 19 digs in the second match.
  • Western would close the day with a combined total of 10.0 blocks from the two matches, Miya Alvarado adding a solo block and five block assists.
NEXT UP
The final day of the Classic concludes on Saturday with the Mountaineers taking on Western Oregon at 8 a.m. followed by their final match at 2:45 p.m. against Bemidji (Minn.) State.
