Comeback Falls 1 Short

Box Score POMONA, Calif. Western Colorado scored on its only two shots on goal, but host Cal Poly Pomona was one better in the Broncos' 3-2 non-conference women's soccer victory over the visiting Mountaineers Friday evening at Kellogg Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Cal Poly Pomona def. Western Colorado, 3-2
Records: Western 0-4-1, Cal Poly Pomona 2-2-1
Location: Kellogg Stadium, Pomona, Calif.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Western fell behind by two goals in less than a one minute span early in the first half, surrendering goals to CPP's Bailey McNitt in the 20th and 21st minute.
  • It wasn't until the 29th minute that the Mountaineers registered their first shot of the game, but Reece Mercer made it count, burying her first goal of the season into the bottom, right corner of the frame to halve the deficit.
  • The Broncos only got off one more shot during the opening 45 minutes but came out of the halftime break with renewed pressure in Western's defensive third. They owned possession for long periods in the second half, ringing up the next 10 shots of the game only to have the Mountaineers' Mei Hayashizaki come up with saves on each of the five that were on goal.
  • The 11th consecutive shot by CPP was the dagger, though, as it finally got one past Hayashizaki in the 78th to increase its lead.
  • Not giving up easily, Western mounted offensive pressure of its own, enough that it caused a Bronco foul in the box for a resulting penalty kick midway through the 86th. Luci Gulbransen converted the PK, her first career goal for Western, to once more draw within one of CPP.
  • The Mountaineer pressure continued, setting up a pair of corner kicks in the final five minutes that unfortunately did not result in finding the late equalizer.
ON THE PITCH
  • Mercer's goal was the third of her career, adding to the two scored during her freshman campaign in 2022.
  • Hayashizaki would finish the game with six saves. CPP's Bella Hara would earn the win surrendering two goals without registering one save.
  • The Broncos would tally 17 shots in the game, nine of which made it on frame.
NEXT UP
Western will make a short trip across Los Angeles to play Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT.
