1st Win Led by Cockman, Maves

GUNNISON, Colo.  Rachel Cockman's game-high 20 points and Jayda Maves' 16 helped lead Western Colorado to its first win of the season, a 64-58 victory over visiting Eastern New Mexico University in non-conference women's basketball action Saturday evening at Paul Wright Gym.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western def. ENMU, 64-58
Records: Western 1-3, ENMU 3-1
Location: Paul Wright Gym, Gunnison, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A Maves 3-pointer followed by a jumper by Ericka Lane erased Western's only deficit of the game, 7-3, spurring the Mountaineers to hand the Greyhounds their first defeat of the season.
  • Western outscored ENMU by seven points in the first quarter, and again by seven in the second to take a 14-point lead, 32-18, into the halftime break.
  • Eastern had climbed back to within four (18-14) early in the second frame but the Mountaineers went on an 8-0 run that quieted the Greyhounds' rally.
  • The Western run began with an Eva Kingston trey and a Maves layup. Cockman had a blocked shot and soon after Ivey Schmidt dropped in a pair of free throws before Lane added one more free throw to extend the advantage to 12.
  • Late in the third quarter the Greyhounds pulled off another rally to creep within four points at 43-39, but Western again fended off the challenge and scored 10 of the next 14 points to open back up its lead.
  • ENMU had one last push, getting to within three, 53-30, with 5:47 to play, but Rachel Novak's 3-pointer and a Maves layup-and-1 slowed down the Greyhounds who would get no closer the rest of the way.
COURT NOTES
  • For the second night in a row, Cockman came alive in the offensive end of the court in the second half, scoring 15 of her 20 points over the final 20 minutes. For the game she shot 70-percent (7-of-10) including a pair of 3-pointers and a 4-for-5 night at the free throw line.
  • Maves finished the night at 50 % (5-of-10) and was also a defensive thorn in the Greyhounds' side all night, drawing eight fouls to change possessions on the court.
  • Western got 40 points from its starters, but 24 points from the bench while limiting the Greyhound subs to a total of 4 points became one of the deciding factors in the game.
  • The Mountaineers finished the night hitting 51% from the floor, while hounding the Greyhounds' offense limited ENMU to a 36% night.
UP NEXT
Western will take a few days for the holiday break but will quickly return to action Saturday, Nov. 25 at Northern New Mexico College in the Mountaineers' final non-conference game of the season.
