Mountaineers open home schedule with a pair of non-conference games

GUNNISON, Colo Western Colorado's Women Basketball team is looking for their first win of the season as the Mountaineers host their home opening weekend against Texas A&M Kingsville on Friday, November 17 at 5 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. tip off on Saturday November 18 against Eastern New Mexico.  

The Mountaineers are also offering free admission to the Western Colorado Basketball doubleheader Friday and Saturday night to anyone who shows their football ticket at Paul Wright Gym. 

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THIS WEEKEND | 2023 Stats  

  • Western Colorado went 0-2 last weekend in the D2 Conference Challenge but kept a close game with then No. 25 Angelo State falling by just nine points.  

  • Rachel Cockman had a strong opening weekend, recording a pair of double-doubles with 19 points and 12 rebounds in Friday's match up with Texas Women's. She followed that up with 15 rebounds and 18 points in the Mountaineers' contest with the Rams Saturday night.  

  • As a team the Mountaineers registered a 28.7-percent shooting from the field while averaging 16.5 shots from the field per game.  

JAVLINAS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023 Stats 

  • TAMUK comes into this weekend after going 0-3 to begin their season.  

  • Janessa Payne has been solid for her team going 40-percent shooting from the field in her first three games of the season. She is averaging 5.3 points per game, while Shelby Ray is averaging 13.3 points per game.  

  • Mia Rivers leads the Javlinas in rebounds with 22 total boards with an average of 7.3 rebounds per game while the team is averaging 40 per game.  

GREYHOUNDS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023 Stats 

  • The Greyhounds opened the season with a pair of wins against a pair of RMAC teams where they held their opponents to 60.5 points per game.  

  • ENMU hit 34.6-percent of their shots from behind the arc and 46-percent from the field, while Deja Adrian has registered 19.5 points per game to start the season.  

  • Vanessa Oduah leads the team's rebounding efforts with 10.5 boards per game, while as a team the hounds pull down 36.5 rebounds per game.

Western Colorado will be on the road next weekend to face Northern New Mexico in Espanola, N.M., with tip off at 6 p.m.
