HOW IT HAPPENED
- Though the overall outcome was a straight-set loss Friday night at eighth-ranked MSU Denver, Western challenged the Roadrunners to the final points of the third set, and on Saturday at Mines that energy was apparent as the Mountaineers traded points with the Orediggers through the opening phases of the first set.
- Mines broke free to forge a 12-7 advantage, but Western battled back and finally evened the score at 23-23 behind a Maggie Olson kill that drew it to within one, and an Olson service ace that tied things up.
- The Orediggers needed to call a timeout to gather themselves, and the break seemed to be the right call as they scored the next two points to claim the opening set by a narrow two-point margin.
- Western was unable to recover from a 4-0 start by Mines in the second set and fell behind by as many as 11 points in the third as the Orediggers closed out the sweep in a match they had to win to remain in contention for an RMAC postseason spot.
