Mountaineers start season with a Win

CANYON, Texas The Mountaineers opened the 2023-24 season with a 59-57 win over University of Tyler Texas in Canyon, Texas.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Kade Juelfs gave Western Colorado momentum a minute into the game with a three pointer that gave his team the lead that they held onto the rest of the game.  

  • Out of the Mountaineers' 35 points in the first half the bench registered 18 of those points, which included eight points from Xavier Harris who led the team in points in the first.  

  • The Patriots won the second half over the Mountaineers 34-24 by being able to capitalize on second chances and fast break opportunities. While UT Tyler never took the lead, they went on a six-point run with five minutes left in the game.  

  • Alec Zambie made a two-point shot in the paint with 50 seconds left to bring his team within two. The Mountaineers responded with a steal recorded by Avery Rembao which led to Juelfs earning a trip to the free throw line. Zambie then found an opportunity to tie the game but went in for the layup which put UT Tyler down one with ten seconds left on the clock.  

  • The Mountaineers capped off the win with Amar Rivers taking a trip to the charity strip with six seconds left. He was unable to make the shot but after a defensive rebound and missed shot from UT Tyler Western Colorado got the win.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Trevin Lieck led Western Colorado with 13 points in the season opener including a 44-percent shooting from the field. He was also 5-for-6 from the free throw line.  

  • On the defensive side, Juelfs and Andrew Reichart both led the team with eight total rebounds including seven defensive boards each.  

  • As a team, the Mountaineers went 33.3-percent shooting from the field, while posting a 53.3 clip from beyond the arc.  

  • UT Tyler was led by Jonathan Jackson with 16 points, while Alec Zambie had nine rebounds. The Patriots dominated the second half with a 43.8 percent shooting compared to their 22.9 -clip from the field in the first.
