Mountaineers Swept by Griffins

SPEARFISH, S.D.  Western Colorado volleyball was swept by Westminster University, 3-0, Friday evening in a non-conference, neutral-site match played at Black Hills State University's Donald E. Young Sports & Fitness Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Westminster def. Western, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21)
Records: Western 5-17, Westminster 9-13
Location: Donald E. Young Sports & Fitness Center, Spearfish, S.D.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Western had a difficult time getting revved up right out of the gate, never leading in an opening-set loss.
  • Though they also never had the lead in the second set, the Mountaineers perked up and pushed the Griffins throughout the set. Westminster was able to break free through the middle points but Western battled back from an 18-13 deficit to claw within a point at 22-21. The Griffins were finally able to stop that rally, taking the next three points for the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Mountaineers earned their first lead of the match at 4-3 in the third, but that would be the last lead they would have. Once more the Griffins built a cushion through the middle points of the set, only to have Western bounce back.
  • A 17-10 deficit eventually became just a two-point deficit, 22-20, for Western, however Westminster scored three of the next four points to clinch the match victory.
COURT NOTES
  • The second-set rally included three kills by Maggie Olson, two from Seyun Park, one from Kennedy Kelly, and a solo block by Nur Turkmenoglu.
  • The third-set rally was fueled by three Kelly kills, one each from Olson and Park, a service ace by Elizabeth Rupprecht, and a block from Addison Lynn and Kelly.
  • Park would finish with a team-high 10 kills and a .348 attack percentage. Kelly added 9 kills and Olson had an 8-kill night.
  • Three Mountaineers reached double digits in digs, led by Olson's 16. Rupprecht came up with 13 and Turkmenoglu added 11 to her 27 set assists.
NEXT UP
  • The Mountaineers host their final homestand of the season with their next two matches.
  • It's Blackout Night on Friday, November 3 against Colorado State University Pueblo, and Saturday brings Adams State University to Paul Wright Gym for an 80s theme night and for Western volleyball's Senior Night.
